The Microsoft-owned software development platform GitHub has revealed a major enhancement to its widely used AI coding tool, GitHub Copilot. The company announced a new “premium requests” system on Friday, which limits usage for subscribers who choose advanced AI models beyond the basic offering to perform complex tasks such as “agentic” coding and multi-file modifications. The update could lead to higher expenses for users who depend on Copilot’s complex features, since these top-tier AI systems require more computational resources.
Copilot subscribers will continue to have unlimited access to GPT-4o but will encounter monthly limits when using advanced models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet. Starting May 5th, users subscribed to the $20 monthly Copilot Pro plan will face a new restriction of 300 premium requests per month. The Copilot Business plan allows users access to 300 premium requests each month, while Enterprise subscribers receive 1,000 premium requests per user. The Business and Enterprise tier adjustments will take place during the period from May 12th through May 19th.
GitHub offers additional usage options to users who might exceed their premium request limits. Users subscribed to affected plans can buy extra premium requests for $0.04 each. The pay-as-you-go approach provides flexible solutions for users who experience intermittent increases in their demand for advanced AI capabilities. GitHub now offers a new subscription option called Copilot Pro+, which customers can purchase for $39 monthly. The premium plan delivers 1,500 premium requests monthly while assuring subscribers access to top-tier models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4.5.
The recent price strategy change for advanced AI models at Copilot occurred shortly after Devin’s similar announcement, which indicates a growing pattern in the AI development tool industry. The advancement of these systems in parallel likely stems from their need for extensive computational power to function correctly. The enhanced fact-checking capabilities of reasoning-centric models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet provide higher accuracy but require much greater processing power and time, which raises operational costs for providers. GitHub introduced premium requests to synchronize service pricing with the computational expenses involved in operating complex AI models while maintaining access to advanced AI solutions and accommodating different user requirements.
Implications for Users and the Growth of GitHub Copilot
GitHub has launched premium requests, which represent an important change in its approach to generating revenue from the advanced functions of its AI coding assistant. Copilot will continue to offer unlimited access to its base model but now includes a tiered payment system that ties the cost of its high-performance features to actual usage. The implementation of premium requests will drive users to assess their dependency on advanced AI features and consider modifications to their development processes or possible plan upgrades according to their unique requirements and use frequency for agentic coding and multi-file editing tools.
This change is expected to initiate further conversations among developers about AI coding assistants’ usefulness and cost implications as development environments increasingly adopt more advanced AI models. Developers must consider the advantages of advanced AI models like improved task accuracy and efficiency, alongside the potential financial implications of the new premium request system. All subscribers receive access to a base model that supports unlimited standard task usage as a baseline, while premium request options serve users who need to purchase enhanced AI capabilities.
Even though Microsoft implemented usage-based pricing for premium versions of GitHub Copilot, the platform has proven to be an important source of income for its owner. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella declared in August of last year that GitHub experienced more than 40% of its revenue growth in 2024 due to Copilot. Copilot’s present business volume already exceeds the total revenue generated by GitHub at the time Microsoft acquired it seven years ago, according to Nadella. The swift integration and influential role of AI-driven coding assistants among developers demonstrate their vital role in enhancing GitHub’s financial success. The implementation of premium request features will not slow down this growth path but instead serves as an enhancement to its monetization model as technology develops and advanced AI needs in software development keep growing. The updated tiered pricing system targets diverse user requirements and usage habits while making sure costs match both the value delivered and computational resources used.
