Nine teenagers have been arrested in the fatal June 24 shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, authorities said. The group was allegedly involved in an argument “over a girl,” a deadly fight captured on video in part by one of the suspects, and two teens have now been charged with murder in connection with the teen’s death.
Wright was found dead on June 24 after being shot several times on First Neck Road, deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said. The rural road is about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway was arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly shooting the victim following an argument. But prosecutors say Raper had help luring the victim to the scene and did not act alone.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office later announced the arrest of eight additional suspects, who are between 17 and 19 years old, in the weeks since Wright’s death. They face several charges, including murder and being an accessory before and after the fact, and some were charged as adults. The suspects were arrested in Florence County, Horry County, and Georgetown County.
“This shooting death was preventable, and it had to do with a high school dispute,” Sheriff T.J. Joye told WPDE-TV. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female. The sad thing is,you’veu got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Girlfriend Arrested Among the 9 Suspects Charged in Fatal Shooting
The parents of the victim expressed frustration with the ongoing court proceedings to Fox News Digital. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” his mother, Ashley Lindsey, said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
One of the nine teens charged in Wright’s death is his girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach. According to arrest warrants, she brought Raper to the rural road where he shot the victim, and has been charged as an accessory before and after the fact to murder. Prosecutors say she was aware that Raper was armed and that a physical altercation was likely to ensue.
South Carolina law provides for the prosecution of teens as adults in some cases, and law enforcement officials have said five of the suspects in this case are being prosecuted as adults. Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that detail in an interview with WBTW-TV.
“The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” he said. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation.”
WBTW reports that at least three of the other teenagers involved in this case, all of whom are from the Myrtle Beach area, have been charged with murder. They are 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns.
Raper was arrested on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was being held in jail without bond aast week. Kendall has also been charged with murder and held without bond, according to Florence County Jail records. Belviso and Kearns were released on $20,000 surety bonds last week and remain free pending trial.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has declined to comment on the details of the case and did not provide additional information beyond the arrest notices, citing the ongoing investigation. Prosecutors have also declined to comment. Wright’s mother has spoken at various points with the press as she publicly mourns the loss of her son.
In interviews, she lamented the drawn-out nature of the legal proceedings, which the arrests have at least temporarily stalled. Her son’s girlfriend and several of his friends are among those now accused of setting him up and killing him. The fatal shooting has also raised questions in the community about the roles of teenage drama, bullying, and easy access to firearms in leading to deadly results.
