Fisher River Cree Nation Works to Reclaim Cree Language

In Manitoba's Interlake region, Fisher River Cree Nation is taking significant steps to restore fluency in its traditional language among younger generations. The community, where most adults can no longer speak Cree due to the legacy of residential schools, has implemented a school-based program for students from nursery to Grade 6.

Reviving Identity Through Education

Janet Crate, a resident of Fisher River Cree Nation, reflects on her family's language loss. Her great-granddaughter Emersyn, aged four, is currently the first in the family in decades to learn Cree at school. Crate, 73, expressed deep regret over not having learned or taught the language, but now feels optimism as the community's efforts take root.

Much of the language was lost when residential schools discouraged and punished Indigenous students for speaking Cree. Crate's parents, residential school survivors, chose not to pass on the language, fearing repercussions. By the turn of the century, as many of the community's elders passed away, the threat of losing the language grew severe, prompting efforts to revitalize it, starting with classroom instruction.

Dedicated School Program and Language Instruction

The language program at Fisher River's elementary school has evolved over the past decade. Now, students from nursery to Grade 6 take dedicated Cree classes every other day. Vice-principal Norma Woodhouse emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, "The Cree language is there. We just have to open it up and let it come alive."

Frank George, who started teaching Cree at the elementary school in 2021, recalled how students initially felt shy about speaking. By gradually introducing vocabulary—colors, numbers, animals, shapes—students gained confidence and fluency. Today, most can introduce themselves, discuss family and community, and read and write Cree syllabics, which form the language's writing system.

"Language is part of who they are," George explained, highlighting the critical role of language in shaping identity and belonging for the students.

Impact on the Next Generation

Lathen Sinclair, a Grade 5 student, shared his pride in learning Cree, noting it is both his language and his culture. With grandparents who are fluent, he hopes to communicate with them in Cree one day, illustrating the intergenerational impact of the language revival efforts.

School System Commitment and Staff Participation

Nora Murdock, Fisher River Cree Nation's director of education, explained that fluency will take years to rebuild to the levels seen before the residential school era. The community has developed a Cree language curriculum, dividing topics across grades to build skills progressively and achieve consistency.

In 2024, Fisher River's band council passed a resolution making Cree revitalization foundational to its school system. All education staff are now required to speak Cree and include it in their instruction, and teacher training is underway. The community is also seeking to expand the program with a dedicated teacher for grades 7 to 12.

Murdock said that each effort brings "a sense of pride," as some children now speak Cree at home. Janet Crate echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that her great-granddaughter might teach Cree to future generations, reversing decades of language suppression.

Looking to the Future

Fisher River's comprehensive approach aims to create fluent speakers and strengthen community identity. By reclaiming the language, members of the First Nation are reconnecting with their cultural roots and ensuring the Cree language remains a living, vital part of their heritage.
