Stranger Things Finale Will Leave No Character Unchanged
Netflix has released the official extended teaser trailer for the upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things. The season is slated to debut late this year. As per usual, the trailer doesnt leave much to the imagination, dropping viewers right into the musty atmosphere of Hawkins as it ramps up the threat posed by the Upside Down.
The trailer opens with a familiar creaking door. In a dark and dimly lit hallway, we see doors slowly swinging open. There are the little hearts we know so wellthe Upside Down has started to seep more fully into Hawkins. Soon after that, were treated to a more active trailer than we usually get. What we see in this clip is people hiding from demo-dogs, flickering lights, and flashes of a flamethrower. But what gets us is the first glimpse of Linda Hamilton, who makes a surprise appearance and comes fully armed and battle-ready in Season 5 to join the castaways from Hawkins.
As you may remember, the end of Season 4 saw Vecnaevery characters worst nightmare, and quite possibly the strongest villain in the whole seriespulling open a gargantuan gate so large that it causes the Upside Down to burst through and fill the town of Hawkins. In the new teaser trailer, we learn that Season 5 will take place during the fall of 1987 and that the plot will run in parallel to the third anniversary of Will Byers initial disappearance, which started the whole story of Stranger Things way back in Season 1.
The trailer doesnt go into much more detail about the plot. There are eight episodes for the final season, but Stranger Things Season 5 will not be the traditional episode length. Each of the episodes will be feature-length, which means that the entire series is eight movies. The official summary sets it up with even more intrigue: Hawkins has been permanently altered with the Rifts torn open. Everyone, ol, and new, is on the same mission now: track down and kill Vecna. But where is he? No one knows. Whats he up to next? The only clue is that the U.S. government has now put Hawkins under military quarantine and is on high alert to capture Eleven. This will mean that she will be forced to go into hiding once more.
As for whats next for the fans? As more and more clips drop for Season 5, we learn about the usual coming back around. In one heart-pounding sequence, Lucas and his entourage are shown sneaking around and hiding behind boxes from a rapid approach by demo-dogs in what appears to be an inside joke on the Jurassic Park velociraptor kitchen scene. If there was any doubt, the one scene guaranteed to make your skin crawl is when Vecna chillingly and slowly utters those words. Found. You.
The emotional impact doesnt end there. What we get next from the trailer is the quick but scarring sight of Eddie Munsons gravestone being vandalized with the words Burn in hell. As much as he sacrificed himself to protect Mike, Dustin, and their friends during the bloody showdown in Season 4s finale, theres one thing the Upside Down failed to swallow: how much of Hawkins believes Eddie to be a traitor. His death in the last episode is as emotional as Bob Newbys death in Season 2. Eddies death will stick with our characters and the audience for a while.
As for what the structure of Season 5 will be like? Well, its safe to say that fans of Stranger Things will be a little disappointed. Netflix, like the greedy overlords that they are, has decided to split the eight episodes of the final season into three parts. This decision is already being regarded by fans as both highly insensitive and one that will lead to more frustration in the year leading up to the third volume dropping. There are no set release dates for Volume 2 or 3 just yet, but we do know that the first part of Stranger Things Season 5 will premiere on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will land a month later on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. Volume 3, for the longest, most exciting, and most heartbreaking finale, is December 31, 2025, on New Years Eve.
Netflixs method of dragging out the eight episodes over the holiday period means that the Hawkins crew will be fighting ao the season finale during the lead-up to the holidays. That means that Stranger Things 5 will be on pop cultures collective mind for at least a month leading up to the new year.
For the fans that have been along for the entire Stranger Things ride, Season 5 isnt just the end of a Netflix series,;its the end of the last show that has lasted five seasons and, in many ways, served as an early childhood for a new generation. Fans have been theorizing, qquibbling and even creating about the show for years now. It has become part of the fabric of pop culture. But as the extended trailer shows, theres no coming back. This is the last ride.
The big question that remains now is if everyone from the core cast will make it out alive at the end of the journey. The one certainty is that when the credits start rolling on December 31, 2025, for the last episode of Stranger Things, the Hawkins gang will have given it their all to end this nightmarefor better or for worsetogether, for the last time.
